Newsweekly for July 24

Local Events and Opportunities

The offices of Virginia Mennonite Conference will be closed on Monday, July 25 following Conference Assembly.

Empowering Women: Money, Health and Faith is a Mennonite Women USA resourcing event that will take place on August 12-13 at Peace Mennonite Church in Aurora, Colorado, just east of Denver. In previous years, this kind of event was called PREP (preparing, resourcing, encouraging, praising) and was held specifically for area-conference women leaders. This year, this event is being opened up to all women, because, let’s be honest – who among us doesn’t need to be empowered with regards to our understanding of money and our personal health? We will experience and enjoy networking, friend-making, worship, inspiration, nurture, eating, education and our favorite word: empowerment – that’s what you can expect on Aug. 12-13. Rhoda Blough, of Denver, and Teresa Boshart Yoder of Harrisonburg, VA, will present. As staff of Everence, they bring passion, experience and tools for us to understand our relationship with money and our personal health.  These professionals will provide handouts, books, journals and other resources. There is no “ideal” host – some are young families, some are middle-aged and some are retired. Hosts develop their own unique relationships with IVEP participants. This is a wonderful opportunity for families with children who are learning Spanish. We hope that the IVEP participant will become part of the family. IVEP is a year-long work and cultural exchange opportunity for young, Christian adults. Every year 60 participants come from more than 25 countries around the world to volunteer in the U.S. or Canada, where they live with a local person or family. EMU IVEPers arrive mid-August and leave for summer placements the first week of May. Contact Gretchen Maust at Gretchen.maust@emu.edu for more information.
